Colour maintains a prime position in the feeling of our homes. Because colour has the ability to set a scene and an atmosphere, it’s important to understand the basic colour theory. Simple guidelines for making the right colour choices start with a colour wheel.
The 3 primary colours are red, blue, &-yellow. Secondary colours are purple, green & orange. Choosing colours from one related group is considered layering which leads to subtle effects. If you don’t want one colour to stand out repeat it in tones and textures. A scheme based around just one colour is called "monochromatic". A collection of creams or whites are the more usual examples.
Neutrals based on browns, greys and whites form a calming feel and can be used with accent colours to change a room dramatically from season to season by just changing cushions, throws, rugs, etc. Check your colours at different times of the day as light can change the hue of a colour. Selecting a colour from a favourite piece to start basing your scheme around is a good idea to form a scheme, keeping in mind the flooring as it is a component of a scheme and the hardest to change.
